Rather than negotiate for land access with the timber companies like the OROC, the CCFS concluded that the most effective way to protect the forest from logging was to buy part of it. It was an ambitious plan but, in 2005, after five years of vigorous fundraising, the society accumulated sufficient money to purchase a 72-hectare parcel of pristine forest close to the village for C$1.2 million. They promptly eco-gifted the land back to Cumberland as a "Community Forest".
